Earthquake Preparation

Earthquake Preparation

The year 1906 was a determining factor in how future resident of the San Francisco area would live their lives. Will they be able to sleep peacefully at night knowing that anything can happen between the time they slept and the time they will be awake. But the question for most people is the possibility that they may never wake up again.

Earthquake Preparation
Earthquake Preparation

The same goes for the people in Mexico, Baguio in the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan and other countries that have been victimized by strong earthquakes. Most of these people were caught unaware and this made the disaster more disastrous.

San Franciscans are aware that someday, their city will fall into the depths of the city. But why do they continue to live in a city, which though beautiful, is a catastrophe waiting to happen again?

Most of the people living in earthquake-prone areas prefer to live each day with the thought that they might never wake up again. However, what makes them different from majority of the people living safe lives in safe places is the fact that they are aware that a tragedy like an earthquake may strike them anytime and they are prepared for it.

These people party and live life to the fullest but they made sure they live in earthquake-safe buildings. Most of the high rise establishments were constructed with a strong earthquake in mind

Jason, a technology specialist lives in the Marina area which is the most earthquake-prone area in the city. While he accepts that he is taking a big risk living in that area, he takes no chances and always stores several gallons of water nearby.

He has also prepared earthquake packs and emergency kits containing first aid medicines as well as food packs that can be eaten right out of the packet. He also has extra flashlights, batteries and other thing-a-magics guaranteed to make any normal person flip out.

The most important thing to remember during an earthquake is to duck and keep off everything heavy that may fall on anyone. However, there are other earthquake emergency tips that will benefit any person who would be faced with an emergency earthquake situation at any time in his life.

When faced with an earthquake circumstance, it is always better to seek refuge from tables that can protect a person from heavy objects that are falling from everywhere. When this is however not practical, a person should immediately go out and proceed to an open area without the danger of falling trees, high rises or power cables.

Those who are caught driving when an earthquake occurs would be better off if they stay inside their car. When inside a grocery or a mall, make sure that the person is away from heavy shelves and other objects. When inside a theater or a sports stadium and an earthquake occurs, never run for safety and join the hundreds of people doing the same. Duck under the seat and wait until everything clears up.

A lot of people get hurt or even die not because of the earthquake itself but because of panic and failure to prepare for such an emergency. It is always helpful to have an emergency earthquake plan even if earthquakes are not common in the area.

Survival will always depend on how prepared a person is for emergencies. People who have not prepared for the worse case scenario are the ones who have the tendency to panic. And in most cases, those who panic and lose their presence of mind become the first victims of any emergency,

Summer Anti-Boredom List

Summer Anti-Boredom List
by Deborah Shelton

Before summer vacation turns into a boredom fest, sit down as a family and make a summer anti-boredom list. Write down a mixture of long overdue chores that you’ve been meaning to get done, along with goals and dreams that you’ve always wanted to accomplish. Don’t leave out the fantastic! If you’ve always wanted to ride on a unicorn, even though there is no such animal, write it down. You may read the list one day when you’re bored, see the unicorn wish, and decide to take horseback riding lessons.
With an anti-boredom list displayed prominently on the refrigerator, fun is just around the corner. Take a look at my family’s summer anti-boredom list to get an idea. By the way, can you tell which entries belong to our five-year-old son?

Experience Privacy and Intimacy with a Mountain Cabin Rental

Each summer, a large number of individuals flock to the “hottest,” vacation destinations. Popular summer vacation destinations often include costal beaches. To many individuals, a beach vacation seem ideal, but it is the lack of privacy that does not. Whether you are vacationing with your family, friends, or your romantic partner, you may want to consider cabin rentals in the mountains.

Mountain cabin rentals are similar to costal cottages. The only difference is their location and, sometimes, the name. Mountain rentals are often referred to as cabins. Mountain cabin rentals are located in many portions of the United States. One of the reasons why they are so popular is because they can create a safe, fun, private, and romantic environment.

While most mountain cabin rentals are private, most are located within a short driving distance or walking distance to a popular attraction. These attractions may include hiking rails, biking trails, ponds, streams, or lakes. The facilities, attractions, and activities found at each mountain cabin rental will all depend on their location.

When searching for mountain cabin rentals, you have a number of locations to choose from. Most cabin rentals can be found in popular mountain ranges. These ranges are located in New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, North Carolina, Idaho, and Wyoming. To find the perfect summer vacation destination, you are encouraged to examine each area and the cabin rentals that are available.

Once you have found a summer vacation destination that offers mountain cabin rentals, you will need to select a specific cabin to vacation at. Many cabin rentals are grouped together in a specific area. You may find that all cabins in that area are similar. Despite the similarities, you are still urged to examine each specific cabin. Most examinations can be done online or through the mail.

When examining a mountain cabin, it is important that you thoroughly read through all descriptions and request pictures. An extend rental could be fairly expensive. To help determine the outcome of your vacation, you are urged to see pictures. In this case, a picture really does speak a million words. It is important to know how many bedrooms are in a particular cabin, if there is a working kitchen, and an in-house bathroom.

Since many individuals enjoy mountain vacations due to the lack of technology, you may find certain cabin rentals with bathroom facilities and kitchen facilities that are located outdoors. If you enjoy outdoor grilling, this may not be a problem. However, many find outdoor facilities to be inconvenient.

In addition to what each mountain cabin rental has to offer, you should see what is available in the surrounding area. Important facilities that you should be on the lookout for include general stores, gas stations, or laundromats. Without these facilities it is likely that you would have to make extra preparations for your vacation.

As previously mentioned, mountain cabin rentals are often expensive. If you are planning a vacation on a budget, you may want to examine destinations that are not as well-known or as popular. Destinations you may want to avoid include Jacksonhole in Wyoming, the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Carolinas, and the Adirondacks in New York. If these locations were ones that you wished to visit, instead of avoiding the location altogether you can search for discount vacation packages.

Discount vacation packages may be available for mountain cabin rentals; however, they are sometimes difficult to come by. For the most part, discount vacation packages are reserved for resorts. If you are able to unable to find a valuable vacation package, you can try receiving last minute price reductions. While last minute price reductions are convenient, you are advised against planning your vacation around the expectation of getting one.

No matter where to choose to rent a mountain cabin or how much that rental costs, you are sure to have a private, intimate, and memorable vacation. Why vacation at an overcrowded beach when you can schedule your summer vacation in seclusion?

SCHOOL KID’S ROOM
Once your child starts school, there are required several changes in his room’s layout. Now, a study place is a must, a place where the little scholar can prepare for school, learn and do his homework.

The study place has to be regularly near the window so that his arm will now place a shadow on the books in front of him. Accordingly to this rule, if we are talking about a right-handed child, the light must be on his left, and if talking about a left-handed child, the light must be on his right.
Due to the new born needs of the school-boy, the furniture must include a desk and some small cabinets or a small bookcase.

The study table or desk must have at least 60 X 90 cm and its height and inclination has to be adjustable. There must be some kind of drawers nest to it or in it to deposit books, paper, pens and other school stuff.

For this same purpose, the parents must consider buying a bookcase or a cabinet for books, which fits the room and the height of your child. For a optimal use of space, a desk with a study table and some shelves can be chosen.

Natural lighting has to be supplemented or maintained by a local light. This is why the desk must have on it a lamp with adjustable arm, placed in such a way that it can focalize the light precisely to the point it is needed.
The chair must have an adjustable height, fitting the one of the scholar.

Recently, the computer became a necessary object in the child’s room, even in the early student’s room. Used either for fun or study, it has to become a familiar instrument for the little one.

An “L” shaped desk allows a good position for the computer, with the monitor on one side in the corner. Be careful because the distance from the monitor and to the eyes of the person using the computer has to be of 50 – 70 cm. To better respect this distance, some desks are equipped with a special space for the monitor, positioned a little higher than the actual desk.

New York Sports

New York City is most definitely a city that loves its sports and cheers for the home team. New York is probably the best represented city and state in this country when it comes to major league teams. I’ve never quite seen anything like it but I honestly can’t imagine a night when there isn’t some sort of major sporting event taking place somewhere in this great city.

The National Hockey League that almost wasn’t is back and going strong. New York is represented well by the Ranger’s who have made a wonderful deal this year to woo Shanahan away from the Red Wings. They play their home games at Madison Square Garden and have some of the most loyal fans. Even if you’re say from Detroit and visiting, and if the Rangers are playing at home then it’s the perfect opportunity (assuming you can get a ticket) to drop in and see how Shanahan is adjusting to life in the Big Apple and if he misses life back at the Joe.

Putting hockey aside for now, there are many other professional sports you can enjoy watching while you’re visiting New York City. I think there are a few baseball fans in this city somewhere. I say a few because it seems that they had to create two baseball teams in order to contain all the fans. I will say though that these fans are loyal to a fault to the teams they support. The New York Mets and the New York Yankees represent this great city in Major League Baseball and both teams draw loyal support from all their fans.

The amazing thing to me is that the double-teaming didn’t end with baseball. It seems that New York City also has two National Football League teams as well. The New York Giants and the New York Jets both represent this fair city to football fans across the country. While I have no favorite or even preference for all these teams and really have no idea how a city can survive with this sort of heated division. Obviously they aren’t as rabid as some hockey fans can tend to be or there would be civil war within the streets.

All joking aside, it seems that so far there is only one NBA team and they are the New York Knicks. I won’t go into how unfair it is to so improperly represent hockey and basketball because these guys might actually be getting the better end of the bargain-the entire city roots for them, not just half. With so many major sporting opportunities it’s amazing that men in this city get anything at all accomplished without carrying a portable pocket television with them at all times.

I don’t know about your house, but in my house it’s difficult enough to schedule important events in our family lives around one local team for each sport (and we don’t even have a baseball team). I can’t imagine how women in New York do it. But to all of you women and the men you love, I have to say kudos for supporting your great teams and giving your many visitors such wonderful opportunities to watch our sports when we’re away from home too. It’s hard to identify one thing about this city that is the greatest but that just may be it.

Life Lessons From Hurricane Katrina
by Royane Real

During the past couple of weeks, like many millions of other people around the world I spent a lot of time watching the horrific events taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana, unable and unwilling to believe that what I was seeing was actually taking place in the United States of America.
And though we often forget most big disasters after just a few weeks, I think that people will be talking about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina for a long time to come.
Like many other people, as the disaster unfolded, I assumed that because this was happening in the United States, the rescuing response would be very swift and very well organized. And it wasn’t.
Whenever a big tragedy of this magnitude occurs, whether in the United States or elsewhere in the world, many people will find themselves re-examining how they live, and perhaps examining some of their most basic beliefs about what is truly important
During the week that stranded evacuees waited in heat and filth, desperate for water and food, while others drowned in their own homes as the water levels rose, it really hit me as I thought to myself, Tonight I am in my own home in a safe city. No one I care about is missing. Anytime today that I wanted a drink of water, it was there. The air smelled good. I wan’t afraid. I had food to eat.
This tragedy reminds us: our real needs as human beings are so simple. And when our basic needs are met, our minds get restless and our minds start inventing other needs for us. A new car. More money. A bigger house. A different couch. We forget the difference between our needs and our desires.
On television I saw one family who had nothing left to call home but a mattress on the floor in the basement of a church, but they were some of the happiest people I had ever seen. Happy because they were alive, and they were together and they had hope.
The crisis in New Orleans reminded us again, of what our basic needs are. Food to eat when we are hungry and water to drink when we are thirsty. Being able to live down at night in a safe place. A sweet breath of fresh air.
Being with the people we care about, and people who care about us. Being part of a community where we have value and dignity. Having someone to look after us when we are sick, and someone to comfort us when we are dying.
As the aftermath of the hurricane in New Orleans shows us, even our most basic needs are not guaranteed to always be there. If you have food to eat today, and clean water, and a safe place to live with your loved ones, you’re lucky, and not just lucky in a superficial way. Every day that you get up and your basic needs are met, it is a gift to you, a miracle. mattress on the floor in the basement of a church, but they were some of the happiest people I had ever seen. Dealing with Post-Holiday Blues
by Mary Desaulniers

After the usual pre-Christmas and post holiday celebrations, I found myself feeling a bit depressed and lethargic. The house has become too quiet; friends and family have returned home.
It is not uncommon that we end the holiday season with a sense of letdown. This is probably due to our unrealistic expectation that holiday events can provide us with lasting happiness despite the fact that we know deep down it is impossible for us to be happy all the time.
Even the happiest of people feel blue at times. What is more, feeling blue can actually be good for you. Research shows that mild to moderate doses of negative experience are beneficial to growth and development. Studies have shown that animals that were moderately stressed when young fared better as adults in recovering from stress. Difficult situations have made them more resilient by giving them opportunities to practice bouncing back from traumatic events. Studies of people who have undergone life-altering trauma reveal a similar resiliency. Those who lose their limbs to devastating accidents tend to bounce back in due time. One study found that those who were injured in accidents felt severely angry and victimized after the first week. However, after 8 weeks, most revealed that happiness was their strongest emotion—a situation that demonstrates how adaptable the human mind can be. It also suggests that happiness is not necessarily tied to circumstance, but to the “interpretation” we give to that circumstance.
By the same token, fortunate events can trigger intense happiness, but this state of intense happiness is never lasting. A study of lottery winners done in 1978 found that while the winners experienced a brief period of intense happiness, they returned to their pre-lottery state in due time and did not wind up significantly happier than a control group of subjects who won nothing.
Study after study shows that happiness is not founded on what is normally considered marks of prestige or pleasure. Money (and all that money can buy) does not contribute to lasting happiness. Neither does a good education or youth. In fact, older people (who have probably developed more resilience) seem on the whole to be more satisfied with life than young people are.
However, what does create lasting happiness has a lot to do with a sense of purpose and meaning in life. In his book, ”Authentic Happiness,” psychologist Martin Seligman claims that engagement ( involvement with family, work, hobbies) and meaning ( using personal strength to serve some larger end) are more significant factors to happiness than the pursuit of pleasure. Studies also show that those who are spiritually and communally involved tend to experience more frequently positive emotions and an overall sense of satisfaction with life. What accentuates this satisfaction is the sense of purpose and larger context that religious beliefs provide.
So what can you do to improve your happiness quotient, especially after the holidays?
1. Eliminate the either/or mentality that insists you are either happy or sad. This rigid either /or perception does not make room for the flexibility required to see joy in unhappy events. Even the most tragic of events can be a source of good and it is this insistence that you see good in all situations, even the most disastrous ones, that will predispose you to experience joy. In the aftermath of September 11, victims who survive can remember the horror of the destruction, but also the courage and inspiration of heroes whose heroism remains indestructible. In my case, I began to see the empty house as an opportunity for new growth through meditation and writing.
2. Move away from the victim mentality. You tend to grieve more intensely when you are unwilling to let go of yourself as victim. If you can shift away from being victimized, you can be in a much better position to see how the situation can also be a source of good. Remaining flexible in your perception is the key to resilience.
3. Cultivate an awareness of the silent witness—that is, taking a third party view of yourself. Imagine you as someone watching your “self” from a third party perspective. Detaching yourself from your ego can give you a totally different view of your situation.
4. Nurture a sense of history and time in the way you look at yourself—that is, identify a purpose in your life and develop strategies to achieve it. This purpose will make you more proactive in the way you view your situation. It will also allow you to engage in long-term vision and goals. Oprah Winfrey once said that it was her extreme devastation at age 16(the victim of family abuse) that made her vow she would never be victim again. And she was never victim again; in fact, what is remarkable about Oprah is that she has not stopped re-inventing herself and the contexts of her purpose in life.
Ultimately, our happiness quotient is dependent not on how much we get, but how much we give. The way we see the context of our lives as a whole is often a good place to examine how and what we can give back to our community and the universe that nurtured us.

Adults! Do not be Afraid to Go Back to School
by Robert Crawford III

Many adults want to attend school to farther their education, to help develop their personal development and increase their chances of being promoted but they may feel afraid to return to the classrooms. They may be afraid they will not be able to easily comprehend the materials, information or tests administered by the instructor. They may feel they are too old and have been out of the classroom to long. There could also be some reluctance because of the age bracket between their classmates, which could be an intimidating factor for some matured students trying to return to the classroom. But these are some of the primary reasons they should not be intimated by the classroom, computers or the software being used by students today. Okay, maybe I can understand about the computers if you are not computer savvy, but the residing atmosphere can be accomplished. The very reason they need to go back, other than promotional and personal development is to simply say they did it. Remember there are more options for older student than before; one is Online Classes for those who prefer not to sit in the traditional classrooms. As a veteran of some online classes let me say that some of these classes can be rigorous. But that is another story for a later date.
Do you realize that as an adult that you probably have more experience in this era of your life than before; you have most likely settled down and are more acute about your education then before? Let’s face it; some students do not succeed at college when they attend right after graduating from high school. College is not for everyone, at least right away. You may be surprised that you could possibly be one of the brightest students in the class. Remember you have more on the ball now than when you graduated from high school. Keep in mind a few reasons why you should not be afraid to attend college.
1. There is a need within yourself to get in the educational arena and become motivated, build self-esteem and know that you can be competitive in the classroom as well as for potential employer, so you need and desire the education to succeed.
2. You have tons of experience that your younger counterparts do not have; this is a plus in delegating yourself to the cause of completing a program.
3. This may be a personal or educational goal and you are just as qualified to complete your degree as anyone else.
4. Sometimes being in a classroom environment allows you to be inspired and inspire others to become mobile in their educational and personal pursuit towards their goals.
5. Your self improvement provides you with confidence and builds upon your self esteem as well as helping others in their self esteem.
6. Finally, you can prove to yourself that you can accomplish your goals by not being afraid.

Exercise At Home Or Gym

Settling on the choice of where you will go to work out is a critical stride in achieving your objectives of wellness. A considerable measure of elements will go into this choice, and every one ought to be assessed well before you begin working out. When you have made a choice on where you will go to work out, you can proceed onward to choosing how you plan to work out.

As you most likely know, practicing at home has numerous points of interest. The account division is one of the best points of interest. With the gas costs being what they are today, it is entirely evident that you’ll spare cash on fuel and also wear and tear on your vehicle by practicing at home.

Participations to a rec center can frequently be entirely costly what’s more, might incorporate different things that you needn’t bother with for example, tyke care or swimming pools. You too won’t should be worried about the most recent patterns of activity rigging as you in all probability will be practicing independent from anyone else at home.

Remember that working out at home does require a touch of budgetary commitment. Indeed in spite of the fact that you might plan to run, it is essential that you have excellent running shoes. This statment applies to a gear that you might buy to use at home. In the event that you go out and purchase modest gear, you’ll most likely wind up getting hurt or getting disappointed in light of the fact that you aren’t gaining any ground.

Alongside the monetary profits, practicing at home might likewise help the individuals who don’t care to work out openly. On the off chance that you are agonized over how you look in workout clothes, it is exceptionally soothing to realize that the main individual who must be with you when you practice at home is you. Likewise, when you practice at home, you don’t have to stress about time by any means.

Those of you who are roused by being with individuals you know or come to know while working out far from home, an exercise center might be a superior thought than working out at home. At the rec center, you’ll likewise to a greater extent a choice of gear too, much more than you’ll have at home.

On the off chance that you require different administrations than just weights and hardware, the rec center might have exactly what you require.

In the event that you plan to swim a marathon, you’ll discover the swimming pool at the exercise center to be exactly what you require to set yourself up. Swimming is additionally an awesome exercise for your body and cardio, as it will work muscles in your body that you likely didn’t indeed, even know you had.

Exercise centers will likewise offer you classes that you might discover exceptionally persuading. On the off chance that you go to class on a standard premise, you might be sufficiently inspired to proceed so you don’t need to protect yourself when inquired where you’ve been or what you have been doing.

You can likewise meet new individuals in class, or just help other people along in the event that you pick.

All things considered, settling on the decision of practicing at home or at the exercise center is a decision you ought to make in view of your objectives and individual inclination. The most imperative choice you’ll have to make is to figure out what kind of environment you need to be in and how you need to finish the wellness objectives throughout your life.

When you have thought about it and weighed out the advantages and disadvantages, you’ll have no issue settling on the decision. Continuously remember that once you’ve settled on your decision, you can simply switch on the off chance that you aren’t content with the decision you made.

Angel to Angel

Years ago, my minister spoke to us about how you could solicit the help of your guardian angels to help with conflict resolution. She told us stories about how she and others had successfully asked their guardian angels to speak to the enemy’s guardian angel. The idea being that when you find yourself in an argumentative situation with someone, that you could request that your guardian angel talk angel to angel with their guardian angel about finding a win-win situation. She gave us examples of times when after asking for the angels to help mediate the problem, that the other party suddenly softened and the solutions began to easily show themselves. As she told the stories of her successes with this approach to problem solving, I began to think about how to use it in my own life.
I’m not much for praying in the traditional down on your knees with templed hands approach. I can’t concentrate like that. My knees hurt and I pay more attention to keeping my hands in that saintly position and forget to really connect with any form of a higher celestial type being. It works better for me to take out pen and paper and to hand write a letter to my angels. In really thinking through what I want to say in the letter, I guess I end up sending out a prayer after all. It’s just a different form of prayer. So, when I decided to use my minister’s advice about requesting angel to angel intervention for my problems in life, I immediately started writing letters to my angels and sometimes I wrote the letter directly to the other person’s angel if I could get a ‘feel’ for which angel was looking after them.
It really worked very nicely. I don’t usually have enemies per se, maybe just grumpy coworkers and such, but I did see a softening of spirit and things always got better. Yes, I admit the softening may have come from me, but that’s not what’s important. What matters is that the process served its purpose and peace and harmony was created much easier than before I had started writing to the angels.
So, if they can help us with bad relationships, then why can’t they help us with good ones too? I started using the letters to the angels to help with my love life. I’m sorry to report that the angels will NOT help your crush fall in love with you. Bah! But they will help someone who’s a bit shy but interested feel more comfortable about taking that leap of faith and asking you out. Okay, fair enough. When you just can’t find the words to tell someone that you care about just how much they mean to you, then try writing it to your guardian angel and asking them to deliver the message for you. Again, whether you pray to them or write to them, it forces you to find the words to say exactly what it is you want to say. Perhaps that’s where the magic lies. I don’t know, but when I just write to some vague nothingness in the sky, then nothing happens. It only works when I’m writing to the angels. Maybe they’re real and maybe they’re not, but believing they’re real and that they’ll help seems to work its magic on me and on my relationships.
I read an email from a new friend who had read somewhere that this was a good way to repel negativity. She gave some examples of how she had used it recently in her personal life. The one I thought was very interesting was how she used the angels’ help to protect her sense of personal space. She doesn’t like feeling crowded by strangers and asked that the angels keep everyone back to a comfortable distance. Apparently it worked. That’s an area I hadn’t thought to use it in. I am reminded of walking in dark parking lots to get to my car, or when taking small children to the fair and not wanting to get separated. I will try asking for the angels’ help with these little comfort and safety areas.
I’ve also used the letters to angels technique in my work too. One such letter became an article because they told me it was a universal prayer and needed to be typed up formally for everyone’s benefit. Click here to read The Entrepreneur’s Prayer if you haven’t already. In the past, I’ve used the prayer letters to help me find start up capital for my business and to help me find the right office space to lease. I keep an open-ended request for guidance in all of my spiritual work. I ask them when to write, what to write, when to pitch my work, when to rework the website, and when to have a toes-in-the-sand-at-the-beach-day so as to become re-inspired again. As long as I’m listening, I pretty much always get great advice and am in the flow of some sort of cosmic divine timing. When I can’t ‘hear’ them and need direction, then I will write the letters again. Soon afterwards, I am able to ‘feel’ their presence and can spot the signs again that they’re still here helping me.
I don’t use them too much for personal gain, because I have this funny little voice that says I’m not supposed to bug them for money and material possessions. I am working to get past that belief system because when I have asked them to help with creating a new car or to find the new home we’re meant to live in, they’ve always taken excellent care of us and found the perfect car or the perfect home for us at that time.
Find your form of prayer. I don’t think it matters how you create the prayer, but I do know that it works. Call on them and they will help you, in their way, in their time.

Is It Really ADHD?
by Arthur Buchanan

Is It Really ADHD?
Not everyone who is overly hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive has ADHD. Since most people sometimes blurt out things they didn’t mean to say, or jump from one task to another, or become disorganized and forgetful, how can specialists tell if the problem is ADHD?
Because everyone shows some of these behaviors at times, the diagnosis requires that such behavior be demonstrated to a degree that is inappropriate for the person’s age. The diagnostic guidelines also contain specific requirements for determining when the symptoms indicate ADHD. The behaviors must appear early in life, before age 7, and continue for at least 6 months. Above all, the behaviors must create a real handicap in at least two areas of a person’s life such as in the schoolroom, on the playground, at home, in the community, or in social settings. So someone who shows some symptoms but whose schoolwork or friendships are not impaired by these behaviors would not be diagnosed with ADHD. Nor would a child who seems overly active on the playground but functions well elsewhere receive an ADHD diagnosis.
To assess whether a child has ADHD, specialists consider several critical questions: Are these behaviors excessive, long-term, and pervasive? That is, do they occur more often than in other children the same age? Are they a continuous problem, not just a response to a temporary situation? Do the behaviors occur in several settings or only in one specific place like the playground or in the schoolroom? The person’s pattern of behavior is compared against a set of criteria and characteristics of the disorder as listed in the DSM-IV-TR.
Diagnosis
Some parents see signs of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in their toddler long before the child enters school. The child may lose interest in playing a game or watching a TV show, or may run around completely out of control. But because children mature at different rates and are very different in personality, temperament, and energy levels, it’s useful to get an expert’s opinion of whether the behavior is appropriate for the child’s age. Parents can ask their child’s pediatrician, or a child psychologist or psychiatrist, to assess whether their toddler has an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or is, more likely at this age, just immature or unusually exuberant.
ADHD may be suspected by a parent or caretaker or may go unnoticed until the child runs into problems at school. Given that ADHD tends to affect functioning most strongly in school, sometimes the teacher is the first to recognize that a child is hyperactive or inattentive and may point it out to the parents and/or consult with the school psychologist. Because teachers work with many children, they come to know how “average” children behave in learning situations that require attention and self-control. However, teachers sometimes fail to notice the needs of children who may be more inattentive and passive yet who are quiet and cooperative, such as those with the predominantly inattentive form of ADHD.
Professionals Who Make the Diagnosis.
If ADHD is suspected, to whom can the family turn? What kinds of specialists do they need?
Ideally, the diagnosis should be made by a professional in your area with training in ADHD or in the diagnosis of mental disorders. Child psychiatrists and psychologists, developmental/behavioral pediatricians, or behavioral neurologists are those most often trained in differential diagnosis. Clinical social workers may also have such training.
The family can start by talking with the child’s pediatrician or their family doctor. Some pediatricians may do the assessment themselves, but often they refer the family to an appropriate mental health specialist they know and trust. In addition, state and local agencies that serve families and children, as well as some of the volunteer organizations listed at the end of this document, can help identify appropriate specialists.

Knowing the differences in qualifications and services can help the family choose someone who can best meet their needs. There are several types of specialists qualified to diagnose and treat ADHD. Child psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating childhood mental and behavioral disorders. A psychiatrist can provide therapy and prescribe any needed medications. Child psychologists are also qualified to diagnose and treat ADHD. They can provide therapy for the child and help the family develop ways to deal with the disorder. But psychologists are not medical doctors and must rely on the child’s physician to do medical exams and prescribe medication. Neurologists, doctors who work with disorders of the brain and nervous system, can also diagnose ADHD and prescribe medicines. But unlike psychiatrists and psychologists, neurologists usually do not provide therapy for the emotional aspects of the disorder.
Within each specialty, individual doctors and mental health professionals differ in their experiences with ADHD. So in selecting a specialist, it’s important to find someone with specific training and experience in diagnosing and treating the disorder.
Whatever the specialist’s expertise, his or her first task is to gather information that will rule out other possible reasons for the child’s behavior. Among possible causes of ADHD-like behavior are the following:
A sudden change in the child’s life—the death of a parent or grandparent; parents’ divorce; a parent’s job loss
Undetected seizures, such as in petit mal or temporal lobe seizures
A middle ear infection that causes intermittent hearing problems
Medical disorders that may affect brain functioning
Underachievement caused by learning disability
Anxiety or depression.
Ideally, in ruling out other causes, the specialist checks the child’s school and medical records. There may be a school record of hearing or vision problems, since most schools automatically screen for these. The specialist tries to determine whether the home and classroom environments are unusually stressful or chaotic, and how the child’s parents and teachers deal with the child.
Next the specialist gathers information on the child’s ongoing behavior in order to compare these behaviors to the symptoms and diagnostic criteria listed in the DSM-IV-TR. This also involves talking with the child and, if possible, observing the child in class and other settings.
The child’s teachers, past and present, are asked to rate their observations of the child’s behavior on standardized evaluation forms, known as behavior rating scales, to compare the child’s behavior to that of other children the same age. While rating scales might seem overly subjective, teachers often get to know so many children that their judgment of how a child compares to others is usually a reliable and valid measure.
The specialist interviews the child’s teachers and parents, and may contact other people who know the child well, such as coaches or baby-sitters. Parents are asked to describe their child’s behavior in a variety of situations. They may also fill out a rating scale to indicate how severe and frequent the behaviors seem to be.
In most cases, the child will be evaluated for social adjustment and mental health. Tests of intelligence and learning achievement may be given to see if the child has a learning disability and whether the disability is in one or more subjects.
In looking at the results of these various sources of information, the specialist pays special attention to the child’s behavior during situations that are the most demanding of self-control, as well as noisy or unstructured situations such as parties, or during tasks that require sustained attention, like reading, working math problems, or playing a board game. Behavior during free play or while getting individual attention is given less importance in the evaluation. In such situations, most children with ADHD are able to control their behavior and perform better than in more restrictive situations.
The specialist then pieces together a profile of the child’s behavior. Which ADHD-like behaviors listed in the most recent DSM does the child show? How often? In what situations? How long has the child been doing them? How old was the child when the problem started? Are the behavior problems relatively chronic or enduring or are they periodic in nature? Are the behaviors seriously interfering with the child’s friendships, school activities, home life, or participation in community activities? Does the child have any other related problems? The answers to these questions help identify whether the child’s hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention are significant and long-standing. If so, the child may be diagnosed with ADHD.
A correct diagnosis often resolves confusion about the reasons for the child’s problems that lets parents and child move forward in their lives with more accurate information on what is wrong and what can be done to help. Once the disorder is diagnosed, the child and family can begin to receive whatever combination of educational, medical, and emotional help they need. This may include providing recommendations to school staff, seeking out a more appropriate classroom setting, selecting the right medication, and helping parents to manage their child’s behavior.
